Welcome to Pride Month 2024! As we embark on this vibrant and meaningful journey, we take a moment to reflect on the rich history of LGBTQ+ pride, celebrate our community’s achievements, and look forward to a month full of inspiring stories, powerful insights, and joyful celebrations.
A Brief History of LGBTQ+ Pride
Pride Month, celebrated every June, honors the Stonewall Riots of 1969, a pivotal moment in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. In the early hours of June 28, 1969, a police raid at the Stonewall Inn in New York City sparked a series of spontaneous protests and clashes, led predominantly by transgender women of color, including Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. These courageous actions marked the beginning of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement, galvanizing activists and allies across the globe.
In the years following Stonewall, the LGBTQ+ community organized marches and events to commemorate the uprising. The first Pride marches were held in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago in 1970, symbolizing a powerful call for visibility, equality, and liberation. These marches have since evolved into the colorful and diverse Pride parades we know today, celebrated worldwide with a spirit of unity and resilience.
