So it's the second day of Fall here in NE Ohio and there has been a light rain coming down all morning. Really the only thing about this post that's gay is that it features two dads. Which is really what equality is all about, dealing with life and daily joys and challenges just as everyone else does. But here's some fun ideas and stuff, that I would want to do with my family if I was ever lucky enough to have one at this time.........
As the rain gently taps against the windows and the crisp air signals the arrival of fall, many families find themselves spending a cozy day indoors. For our family of four—two dads, their elementary-aged son, and daughter—a dreary and rainy autumn day doesn’t mean boredom or cabin fever. Instead, it’s the perfect opportunity to slow down and enjoy some quality time together. Here’s how our family makes the most of an indoor fall day with fun activities, warm treats, and plenty of laughter.
1. Morning Pajama Party & Pancake Bar
The day starts slow. The sound of rain is soothing, making it hard for anyone to rush out of bed. Instead, the kids pad down to the kitchen in their favorite pajamas, still groggy from sleep. The dads, always a team, decide to turn breakfast into something special: a pancake bar.
Each family member is involved in the pancake-making process. One dad measures the ingredients while the other flips the pancakes, showing off his expert pancake-flipping technique that always gets the kids giggling. The kids get creative with toppings—whipped cream, berries, chocolate chips, syrup, and even sprinkles make their way onto the table.
Once the pancakes are stacked high, the family sits down together to enjoy their creations. The warmth of the kitchen, the smell of syrup, and the sound of the rain create the perfect setting for a long, leisurely breakfast where stories are shared and laughter fills the air.
2. Build a Blanket Fort for Movie Time
After breakfast, it’s time to transform the living room. Both dads know how much the kids love building forts, so they gather all the blankets and pillows they can find and enlist the kids to help build the ultimate cozy blanket fort. With the living room furniture serving as the foundation, the kids use their imagination to turn it into a secret hideaway.
Once the fort is complete, it’s movie time. The kids pick out a family-friendly movie that everyone can enjoy. Today, it’s a classic animated film that brings back nostalgia for the dads, who remember watching it when they were younger.
The family snuggles up inside the fort with bowls of popcorn, each one topped with different flavors like cheddar, caramel, and classic butter. The dim light from the TV and the sound of rain outside make for the perfect atmosphere to get lost in the world of the movie.
3. Creative Arts and Crafts: Fall-Themed Masterpieces
Once the movie is over and the kids are filled with creative energy, it’s time for arts and crafts. One dad brings out the art supplies—paint, colored pencils, glue, scissors, and a variety of craft papers—and suggests they make fall-themed decorations for the house.
The kids dive into the activity, painting colorful autumn leaves, pumpkins, and even a family portrait. One of the dads is particularly good at drawing, so he helps the kids sketch out their ideas before they bring them to life with paints and markers. The other dad loves messy crafts, so he’s in charge of the glue and glitter station, much to the delight of the kids.
As the family crafts together, the house fills with chatter. The kids share their favorite memories of past fall seasons while one dad talks about how his family used to make paper turkeys to hang up around the house. The kids’ final masterpieces are proudly hung up on the walls, adding a touch of homemade charm to the home.
4. Bake-Off: Fall Treat Edition
After a few hours of crafting, the family starts craving something sweet. What better way to spend a rainy afternoon than baking together? One dad suggests they have a bake-off, where everyone gets to make their favorite fall treat.
They decide on two classics: pumpkin muffins and apple turnovers. The kitchen becomes a whirlwind of activity as one dad supervises the pumpkin muffin mix while the other helps the kids peel and slice apples for the turnovers. The kids take turns measuring, mixing, and pouring, all while trying to sneak bites of the ingredients when they think no one’s looking.
Once everything is in the oven, the smell of cinnamon and warm spices fills the air. As the treats bake, the family takes a break and relaxes in the living room with some hot cocoa. One of the dads plays soft jazz in the background, setting a cozy mood as they wait for their creations to be ready.
When the timer goes off, the family gathers around the kitchen island to taste the results. The muffins are perfectly fluffy, and the turnovers are golden and flaky. It’s a sweet success for everyone.
5. Board Games and Friendly Competition
With their bellies full of delicious treats, the family transitions to the next activity: board games. One of the dads brings out a stack of games from the closet. The family is a big fan of games that involve some strategy, but nothing too serious—after all, the goal is to have fun, not create any sibling rivalries!
The kids beg to play “Catan Junior,” a game they’ve recently fallen in love with. One dad is more competitive than the other and tries to rally the kids to help him win, but it’s all in good fun. Laughter erupts throughout the game as the family navigates the ups and downs of the game board.
After a couple of rounds, they switch to “Uno” for a fast-paced card game that always gets a little intense toward the end. The kids team up to try and outsmart their dads, leading to plenty of hilarious moments when someone forgets to say “Uno!”
6. Storytelling Circle: A Family Tradition
As the day winds down, one of the family’s favorite traditions comes into play: a storytelling circle. They gather in the living room, dim the lights, and sit in a circle with cozy blankets draped over their laps. Each family member takes a turn telling a story—sometimes it’s a favorite from when they were younger, other times it’s a completely made-up adventure that they create on the spot.
One dad starts off with a funny story from his childhood about a rainy day that went terribly wrong, setting the tone for lighthearted storytelling. The kids follow with their own made-up tales, often involving talking animals and magical lands. The other dad, who has a talent for building suspense, ends the circle with a thrilling ghost story that leaves everyone on the edge of their seat—though it’s not too scary, just spooky enough to make them all giggle.
7. Dinner Together: Fall Comfort Foods
By the time evening rolls around, the rain is still falling, and the family feels the comfort of spending a full day together indoors. It’s time for dinner, and both dads decide to make a hearty meal to end the day on a delicious note.
The menu? Homemade butternut squash soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. One dad takes charge of roasting the squash, while the other focuses on making perfectly crispy, gooey grilled cheese. The kids help by setting the table, excited to dig into their comforting meal.
As they sit down together at the dinner table, the family reflects on the day. They talk about their favorite moments, the crafts they made, and how the rain made everything feel even cozier. It’s a simple, heartwarming end to a day filled with love, creativity, and togetherness.
8. Evening Relaxation & Bedtime Stories
After dinner, it’s time to wind down. The kids change into their pajamas, and the family gathers in the living room once again, this time to enjoy some quiet time. One dad reads a few chapters from their favorite bedtime story, a fantasy book that the whole family has been following for weeks.
The rain continues to fall outside, but inside, the home is filled with warmth. The kids yawn as they listen to the soothing voice of their dad reading aloud, and soon, it’s time to tuck them into bed. After hugs, kisses, and one last "goodnight," the kids drift off to sleep, their minds filled with the memories of a fun, rainy day spent indoors.
A rainy fall day might keep this family indoors, but it doesn’t stop them from having fun, connecting with each other, and creating lasting memories. From cooking together to storytelling and everything in between, these two dads and their kids know how to turn a gloomy day into a joyful experience full of love and laughter.
As the rain continues to fall, this family looks forward to many more cozy days spent just like this—together.
